Vincent Herring is widely regarded as one of the world’s foremost voices on alto saxophone, and earned his spot in the jazz pantheon playing alongside legends such as Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey and Freddie Hubbard. Herring’s playing and writing express a deep understanding of the blues and straight-ahead bop, but can easily shift gears into the type of expressive and forceful playing associated with 1960s John Coltrane or Eric Dolphy. Now the saxophone master returns to the international concert stage with a new quartet of top rated New York jazz men. Supported by singular pianist David Kikoski, bassist Yasushi Nakamara, and drummer Peppe Merolla Herring brings his diverse bop and post-bop influences together in a precise and swinging quartet that can easily handle the varied repertoire Herring draws from for inspiration. Saxophonist Vincent Herring's intense, soulful, multi-noted style and ebullient swing have excited audiences worldwide. On stage, Herring and his band often make an incendiary sound over fine and controlled rhythms of modern times.

Vincent started playing saxophone at the age of 11 in school bands and studying privately at Dean Frederick’s School of Music in Vallejo, CA. At the age of 16, Herring was studying at California State University at Chico on a music scholarship. A year later he had won a berth in the United States Military Academy Band at West Point.

Vincent moved to New York City in early 1980's attending Long Island University. He first toured in the United States and Europe as part of the Lionel Hampton Big Band. With his sound strongly influenced by Julian “Cannonball” Adderley, Vincent’s virtuosity and promise came to the attention of Nat Adderley. The two forged a nine-year musical relationship, producing nine albums and touring around the world year after year. After Nat’s death,  Louis Hayes collaborated with Vincent to form the Cannonball Adderley Legacy Band. Vincent worked and recorded with Cedar Walton for more than 20 years.

He has also appeared on stage and or recordings with Freddie Hubbard, Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Hayes, Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers, Horace Silver Quintet, Jack DeJohnette’s Special Edition, Larry Coryell, Steve Turre, The Mingus Big Band (Won a Grammy in 2010), Kenny Barron, Nancy Wilson, Dr. Billy Taylor, Carla Bley, Mike LeDonne, Carl Allen, Ron McClure, and John Hicks among others. His extensive guest soloist appearances include performances with Wynton Marsalis at Lincoln Center and Jon Faddis and The Carnegie Hall Big Band.

Vincent's discography reveals over 20 titles as a leader and over 250 as a sideman. His current and past projects speak to the wide range of his musical interest and versatility: The Vincent Herring-Joris Dudli’s Soul Jazz Alliance, Earth Jazz Agents, Friendly Fire with Vincent Herring and Eric Alexander. Vincent leads a band called Jazz The Story with Jon Faddis, Jeremy Pelt, Steve Turre, James Carter, Eric Alexander, Mike LeDonne, Kenny Davis, Carl Allen and Nicolas Bearde.

Vincent tours frequently with his projects around the in the United States, Europe, Japan, China and around the world. Vincent continues to share his distinct voice and musical knowledge, as a performer and jazz educator. He is currently on staff at William Paterson University and at Manhattan School of Music.

Dave Kikoski – piano

Dave Kikoski was born in Milltown, NJ in 1961. Growing up within a musical family, when Dave turned the age of six, he was introduced to the piano and given lessons for the first time by his father. Throughout middle and high school, Dave continued to cultivate his love for piano and moved on to working with various jazz and rock groups around town. During this time, Dave also went on to win the New Jersey Allstate Jazz Competition. After high school, Dave was accepted to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston where he earned a bachelor’s degree in piano performance. While in Boston, Dave began meeting other great players such as Pat Matheny who sat in with Dave’s trio. (Later in 1994, Dave and Pat would meet up again and record together on Roy Haynes’ album, “Te-Vou”, which also featured Christian McBride and Donald Harrison).

In 1984, after graduating Berklee, Dave decided to make the move to New York City. There, it didn’t take long for Dave to start making a name for himself and he began playing regularly with renowned players such as Roy Haynes, Bob Berg, Red Rodney, Randy Brecker, and many others. Just two years after his move, Dave landed his first professional recording session in 1986 on Randy Brecker’s album, “In the Idiom”. The album featured him in great company with Joe Henderson, Ron Carter and Al Foster. Dave’s most recent CrissCross release is from a collective named “Opus Five”. Opus Five features new originals by bandmates Seamus Blake, Donald Edwards, Alex Sipiagen and Boris Kozlov. In addition to Opus Five, Dave played on the Mingus Big Band album, “Live at the Jazz Standard”, which won the 2011 Grammy Award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble. In 2015, Dave reunited with Roy Haynes and returned to Blue Note. Currently Dave is continuing to tour the world as both a leader in his own projects as well being a featured sideman among various groups.Dave Kikoski has played on over 100 records including 14 under his own name.

Yasushi Nakamura – acoustic bass

Yasushi Nakamura is praised for imaginative, quicksilver bass lines that deepen the groove. His blend of guitar-like precision and gut-level blues has sparked collaborations with artists such as Wynton Marsalis, Wycliffe Gordon, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Hank Jones, Dave Douglas, Steve Miller, etc. With his charismatic stage presence and artful, hard swinging melodic touch, Nakamura is a first-call performer capturing new audiences and fans around the world.

Born in Tokyo, Nakamura moved to the United States at age 9, and considers both places home. He began with clarinet and tenor saxophone, but his older brother’s study of guitar and drums drove him to pick up the bass. His love of rock and funk aside, the music of Charlie Parker, Ray Brown, Miles Davis were a potent influence on him. Nakamura received a BA in Jazz Performance from Berklee School of Music in 2000, and was awarded a full scholarship to The Juilliard School for his Artist Diploma in 2006. He credits Myron Walden as an early champion, and keeps close ties to Juilliard mentors Victor Goines, Wycliffe Gordon, and Carl Allen, all of whom maintain him in their bands.

Nakamura’s career is flourishing, with consistent engagements at premier jazz festivals including Tokyo, North Sea, Monterey, Ravinia, and venues such as Birdland, Village Vanguard, the Blue Note, the Kennedy Center, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and Carnegie Hall. In 2014, he was honored to play the “NEA Jazz Masters Concert: Celebrating Jamey Abersold, Anthony Braxton, Richard Davis, and Keith Jarrett,” sharing the stage with Joe Lovano and Dave Liebman. A wide array of projects permits him to explore musical styles and collaborations.

Peppe Merolla- drums

Peppe began his musical career as a drummer, singer, and actor at the age of five.Peppe performed and toured with his parents, Tina Barone and Gino Morelli, who are still professional singers and actors.The Merolla family performed in theatres and festivals throughout Italy, Canada, and the United States. As a trumpet player, he performed for two years on a national television show with the famous Claudio Simonetti Orchestra. After receiving his degree from the conservatory, Peppe decided to pursue his love for the drums. He studied with a nationally-known Italian jazz drummer and percussionist, Walter Scotti, During this time, he began to develop a strong appreciation of jazz and was exposed to all forms of commercial music. Peppe also began developing his natural talent as a singer as well as an actor. Peppe acted in three movies. In the popular movie, Scugnizzi, Peppe not only played one of the lead characters, but also sang the movie's soundtrack. The soundtrack became nationally popular; the movie won an Italian Oscar at the International Venice Movie Festival.
