This Thanksgiving, the Blue Note Beijing Jazz Orchestra gives thanks to the Duke: Edward Kennedy Ellington (1899-1974). Arguably the most prolific jazz composer with over 1,700 works to his name, Ellington led a career that spanned over half a century and saw the rise of jazz from its early days as a social music to its ascension as a crown jewel of American art. Ellington was not only an innovator of jazz composition, but was also a pioneer in the orchestral possibilities of the big band; his refined appreciation for the unique voices in his band over the years allowed him to compose music that is still inseparable from the musicians who inspired it: saxophonists such as Johnny Hodges, Ben Webster, and Harry Carney; trombonists such as Joe “Tricky Sam” Nanton and Juan Tizol; trumpeters James “Bubber” Miley and Cootie Williams; pianist and composer Billy Strayhorn, whom Ellington called “my right arm, my left arm, all the eyes in the back of my head, my brainwaves in his head, and his in mine”; and many others. With a special emphasis on pieces that were composed with particular individuals in mind, the BNBJO will present a program of some of Ellington’s most recognizable works to give thanks for his immeasurable contribution to American music.
