Jon Faddis(Trumpet)

Jon Faddis is a consummate musician, conductor, composer, and educator. Marked by both intense integrity and humor, Faddis earned accolades from his close friend  and mentor John Birks “Dizzy” Gillespie, who declared of Faddis, “He’s the best ever, including me!” As a trumpeter, Faddis possesses a virtually unparalleled range and full command of his instrument, making the practically impossible seem effortless. Born 1953, Faddis began playing at age seven, inspired by Louis Armstrong on television. Meeting Dizzy Gillespie at 15 proved to be the pivotal beginning of a unique friendship that spanned almost three decades. Shortly before his 18th birthday, Faddis joined Lionel Hampton’s band, moving from Oakland, California to New York. Faddis worked as lead trumpet for the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, formed his own quartet, and soon began directing orchestras, including the Granny Award-wining United Nation Orchestra, the Dizzy Gillespie 70th Birthday Big Band, the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Stars, the Carnegie Hall Centennial Big Band, and the Chicago Jazz Ensemble. He has also served as guest conductor and featured guest with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. Faddis’ distinctive trumpet appears on hundreds of records and numerous soundtracks for film and television. His recordings as a leader include the Grammy Award-nominated Remembrances (Chesky 1998), Hornucopia (Epic, 1991), Into the Faddisphere (Epic 1989), and Teranga (Koch 2006). Faddis remains true to the tradition of honoring mentors, regularly leading master classes and clinics worldwide. He is a full time faculty member at Conservatory of Music at SUNY-Purchase College, where he is artist-in-residence, professor, and director  of jazz performance program.

Andrew Latona Bio

Andrew Latona was raised in Silver Spring, Maryland and moved to New York after graduating from SUNY Purchase in ’17. Growing up in the greater Washington D.C. area, Andrew was routinely going into the city to attend and play at a gospel church on Sundays, play at the various Jazz and Go-Go clubs through out the city, as well as going to the Basilica Of the National Shrine to hear his father Peter Latona, one of the principal organists and choir director. While in Maryland Andrew studied music with Paul Wingo, Paul Carr and Gary Thomas, and was gigging regularly around the city by the time he was 16. Upon graduating from The Conservatory of Music at Purchase College, Andrew moved to Brooklyn New York where he works as a freelance guitarist. Andrew has played on Stages across the East Coast including but not limited to, The Blue Note NYC, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, Smalls Jazz Club, Zinc Bar, Kennedy Center Millenium Stage, Twins Jazz Club, Bohemian Caverns, and Columbia Station. Andrew has shared the stage with greats such as Jon Faddis, Butch Warren, Ton Harrell, Cecil Bridgewater, Rene Rosnes, Bill Charlap, and several others. Andrew is a part of New York based ensembles; ONYX Collective, HD Quintet, and the Quiet Fire Organ Trio.

Malik McLaurine

Born and raised in Queens, NY, Malik McLaurine is a young rising Bass player on the scene. Still residing in Queens, Malik attended the renowned SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Music where he studied under Doug Weiss and Todd Coolman. Although his time at SUNY Purchase prepared Malik for his arrival to the New York scene, he attributes most of the credit for his success to his lessons with his father, the amazing Bass player, Marcus McLaurine. Since graduating in 2016, Malik has played and recorded with Jon Faddis, Abraham Burton, Patience Higgons, David Gibson, Eric McPherson, Ed Cherry, David Bryant, Antoine Rooney, Gerry Eastman, Jovan Alexandre, Duke Ellington Orchestra, and George Gee Orchestra. Malik also performs with Starchild & The New Romantic which is an R&B Funk band lead by Bryndon Cook.

Rodney Green Bio

Some people seek out a career in music, and some just cannot escape it. As an only child growing up in Camden New Jersey, gospel music and musical instruments surrounded Rodney Green at home and in church, where he spent most of his time. His father was a preacher and organist, and his mother sang in church.

Rodney was drawn to the drum kit, and by age three, would climb on the kit play whenever possible. By his early teens, Green was playing drums in church, but outside he was being exposed to other kinds of music like jazz. His older cousin, also a musician, introduced Rodney to jazz, funk, and soul music, and (along with his high school band teacher) started him listening records like, “A Love Supreme,” “Transition,” and “Four More”. He was blown away by Elvin Jones and Tony Williams–all of the sounds they got out of the drums as well as their range, style and technique.

Rodney soon realized that music could be a profession, and not just a hobby. He knew that playing the drums was his calling. Percussionist Scott Robinson was impressed with Rodney’s playing but realized the young drummer didn’t realize what he was doing, since he was just playing by ear. Robinson offered to teach him for free, and at 14 years old, Rodney got his first lesson. It wasn’t long before the young musician started to sneak out to local clubs to see live music and play gigs. He got to know many of the up and coming musicians on the Philadelphia jazz scene including pianist, Orrin Evans, trumpeter, Duane Eubanks, and bassist Christian McBride.

At the age of 16, friend and drummer Brian Frasier Moore left his gig at Patti LaBelle’s club, Chez LaBelle, and Rodney took over. He influenced the club’s manager to start a Sunday Jazz Brunch, and soon Green was booking musicians like pianist, Evans and saxophonist Sam Newsome at the club. Legendary musician, Bobby Watson was so impressed with the young drummer that he called his parents to ask their permission to take Green to Italy with him, and after much persuasion, they agreed. By age 17 Green, still in high school, was traveling internationally and doing an occasional gig in New York City. After such an occasion, legendary drummer Billy Higgins unexpectedly walked into Sweet Basil, and finished a set. Rodney went home and packed his bags.

His desire to make his mark on the jazz scene had intensified, and one week after graduation, Green took the money that he had saved money from his gigs, and moved to the New York. He got on the scene and quickly developed a name for himself. He was a favorite sub and at only 17 years old, had a remarkable range and a reputation for being an extremely professional young musician. Word continued to spread about the talented young drummer, and Green spent the next couple of years playing with the likes of Christian McBride, Eric Reed, Greg Osby, Joe Henderson, Benny Green, Tom Harrell, and Mulgrew Miller. With a recommendation from bassist, Ben Wolfe, Green joined the band of vocalist Diana Krall at the age of 19.

His two-year tenure with Krall taught him a great deal about the business of music, and the importance of being a responsible, mature young professional. Today, Rodney Green is a seasoned professional with experience and skill beyond his years. He continues to grow and challenge himself creatively, stepping out as a leader with the Rodney Green Group, writing music and pursuing projects that interest him. For this young musician, who already has a wealth of gigs, experiences, tours and records behind him, the best is yet to come.
