DuOud组合由两位乌德琴演奏家组成。一位是出生于突尼斯的音乐家Jean-Pierre Smadija，另一位则是出生于阿尔及利亚的*乌德琴演奏家Mehdi Haddab。他们将北非的传统技艺与*新的西方科技相融合，创造了一种新的音乐组曲：在非洲音乐的基础上，吸收和改编了当代的音乐风格 --- 碎拍、爵士律动和金属吉他。

DuOud consisits of two oud playing. Tunisian born Jean-Pierre Smadija and and Algerian born master oud player Mehdi Haddab. Blending their North African heritage with the latest Western technology, the pair builds a musical cycle that looks to their African roots while absorbing and morphing contemporary music styles--berak beats, jazz grooves and metal guitar. 

乌德琴（Oud）一词原意是“Wood”木头，这种乐器呈梨形、无品、短颈，作为吉他的祖先，乌德琴让中东音乐充满了凄婉的色彩。而在DuOud 发表的首张专辑《Wild Serenade》中，Smadj和Mehdi Haddab在这古老的乐器上尝试了很多不一样的可能。

The word oud itself means "wood" and this pear-shaped, fretless,short-necked lute--the ancestor of the guitar--is what gives the music of the Middle East its characteristically plangent sound. In their first album Wild Serenade, Smadj and Mehdi Haddab try to make more possibilities when playing this ancient instrument.

两位北非古琴演奏者，与小提琴手、大提琴手，以及打击乐手合作，利用了工作室中触手可及的所有小玩意儿，创造出了一种时而西班牙，时而北印度，又时而融合了纯正巴黎迪斯科味道的音乐风格。他们让乌德琴听起来既像是荒芜沙漠中的孤独声音，又像是混音工作室中*别具一格的音色。但好在DuOud精湛的演奏技艺丝毫没有被电子效果所掩盖。

 For in this group, two North African lute players team up with a violinist, a cellist and a percussionist and plunder the gadgetry of the studio to create effects which are sometimes Spanish, sometimes North Indian and sometimes pure Paris disco. They make it sound like a lone voice in the desert, or like the central figure in a swirling studio mix, but their virtuosity is never swamped by electronic effects.

在一次采访中，Smadj说道：“我们尊重不同的乐器以及过去使用时的音乐传统，我们也一直在用同样的方式演奏他们。但同时我们也是这个时代的音乐人，被现代音色所包围。这也是我们会在旋律中使用电子元素，包括选择电子乌德琴的原因。DuOud拥有一种难以形容却又*的声音。”

“We respect the instrument and the different musical traditions where it was used and we are always working on them but we are also musicians of our time, surrounded by modernsound. That’s why we are using electronic (elements) to support our melodies and we are using electric oud. DuOud also has a unique sound that is difficult to describe,” explained Smadj.

“它既可以是原声的、传统的，也可以是电子的、前卫的。但是当我们在一起的时间越多，*会有更多的新声音值得我们去探索。所以我们称之为“新东方的乌德琴”。

“It can be acoustic and traditional or electric and avant garde but the more we go together, the more we want to explore new sounds so we can perhaps say nu-oriental oud.” 

Smadj同时也提到DuOud并不是以脑海中某个特定的声音所开始的，而是一个逐渐探索的过程。“我们一起演奏所期望的是获得快乐并加以练习。我们不同的背景以及接受的不同音乐教育带来了音色上不同的特性。我很享受电子音乐编曲的过程，但是Mehdi喜爱那些传统的、古老的有趣声音。我们之间的这种互补是促使DuOud发展的关键。”

He also mentioned that DuOud didn’t start with a particular sound in mind. It was a process of exploration. “Our wish was to play together for fun and to practice. But our different backgrounds brought (forth) the originality of the sound (forged from our) different musical education. I’m very involved in electronic programming while Mehdi loves the tradition and the old and funny sounds. Complementing each other is the key to energising DuOud.”

乌德琴是DuOud的核心，这也激励着Smadj和Mehdi尝试不同的角度将乌德琴融入到一些例如爵士和摇滚等新的曲风中。他们不断在演绎乌德琴的经历中获得灵感。也借由这现代的电子节奏，带着古老的乌德琴一起开启了一次“复兴之旅”。

At the centre of it all is the oud and the prospects that it holds, which is the incentive for Smadj and Mehdi to study what could be devised for the instrument and how they would push it into new areas such as jazz and rock.In the meantime, they are drawing from their experiences (in the way of the oud) to mark the subsequent course for their working project. They are carring this ancient instrument to kick off a Revival Tour with modern electronic rhythms.
