—— < esper > by mitsume

Mitsume Tour Esper @SHANGHAI

Mitsume is a Tokyo based indie rock quartet that’s been around since 2009. They’ve independently released three albums and a couple of EPs and singles, including their third full-length, Sasayaki. Always developing and following their own style, Mitsume will be wooing crowds with sweetheart indie pop sensibilities and more danceable numbers through the incorporation of squiggly synths and drum-machine beats.

On December 20, 2017,mitsume released their new single, “Esper.” This is the band’s first release since their June 2016 album “A Long Day.” “Esper” was developed through live performances that took place while mitsume was on tour in Japan and overseas in support of “A Long Day.” The song also shows growth in the songwriting ability of frontman Kawabe Moto. The end result is the highest quality pop song mitsume has made to date.

With Mitsume, it’s all about the moments happening away from the vocals. Which isn’t to discount what Moto Kawabe does while singing — his light vocal delivery adds a melancholy-tinged breeziness to the quartet’s music, and the head-to-the-ground style trumps the more dramatic flourishes of groups such as Suchmos and Never Young Beach for me (which…quick aside, it’s sorta crazy how Mitsume paved the way for both those bands and down-the-ranks projects like Yogee New Waves to have bigger success…musically, not far off!). But it’s the sounds bookending the voice that really set Mitsume apart, and new single “Esper” provides one of the clearest examples in the band’s catalog to date. Just listen to the instrumental passages, featuring sun-soaked guitar playing that sounds just off — the bright rays out of focus just a touch — and the various effects swirling around them. Not quite uneasy, but like those mirage puddles you see on asphalt while driving on a hot day — a weird trick in something otherwise serene.

They will start Tour Esper within Japan and overseas, including one stop in Shanghai. We suggest you get in on presales for ミツメMitsume’s Tour Esper or you might miss out.
