Specters Billiards Tournament Rules (24 pairs, doubles)

    1. Match Length
      – First round: single game knockout (race to 1).
      – Second round and all later stages: race to 2.
      – Grand Final: race to 3.

    2. Lag/Break
Rock–paper–scissors once to decide the first breaker, then alternate breaks thereafter.

    3. Scratch on Break
If the cue ball is pocketed on the break, opponent receives ball-in-hand behind the headstring.

    4. Open Table
Before colors are established, you may not pocket both colors. Any such shot is void; opponent takes turn, and the table remains open.

    5. Cushion Contact
After each shot, the cue ball or any object ball must contact a cushion. If not, it’s a foul and the opponent gets ball-in-hand.*

    6. Double Hit
      Double-hit foul: opponent gets ball-in-hand.*

    7. Calling Shots / 8-Ball
No need to call pockets on normal shots, but the 8-ball must be called. Pocketing the 8-ball in the wrong pocket, or scratching while pocketing the 8-ball, is loss of game.

    8. Ball Off Table
If an object ball is driven off the table, opponent gets ball-in-hand and the ball stays down (if it’s the 8-ball, loss of game).*

    9. Cue Ball Off Table
If the cue ball leaves the table, opponent gets ball-in-hand.

    10. Shot Clock
      Maximum shot time: 2 minutes.

    11. Foot Position
Both feet must remain on the floor while shooting; otherwise it’s a foul and the opponent gets ball-in-hand.

    12. Touching Balls
Touching any ball with hand, body, or clothing is a foul; opponent gets ball-in-hand.

    13. Jump Shots
Jump shots are fouls; opponent gets ball-in-hand.

    14. No Restroom Breaks
Players may not leave for the restroom during matches to keep play flowing.

    15. Handicap Rules
      – Two men vs. one man + one woman: spot 1 ball.
      – One man + one woman vs. two women: spot 1 ball.
      – Two men vs. two women: “after-1” (women may remove one of their own balls after each legal pocket).
The handicapped (receiving) side may choose whether to use the spot or not.

    16. Alternate Shot Timing / Malicious Foul
Rotation players must wait until all balls stop moving before shooting; otherwise it’s a foul and opponent gets ball-in-hand. Interfering with the 8-ball’s path or the cue ball while shooting the 8-ball counts as a malicious foul and loss of game.*

    17. 8-Ball on Break
If the 8-ball is pocketed on the break, the rack does not count. Re-rack and the same breaker breaks again.

    Additional Rules for Doubles

    1. Team Formation
Teams must be formed before check-in. You may form a team in advance or be randomly paired on site. Teams not formed on time are considered withdrawn.

    2. Handicap Rules in Doubles
      – Two men vs. one man + one woman: spot 1 ball.
      – One man + one woman vs. two women: spot 1 ball.
      – Two men vs. two women: “after-1” rule applies.
(“Spot 1” = after the non-handicapped side pockets a ball, the receiving side may remove one of its own balls.)

    3. Alternate Shot Rule
Each player takes one shot in turn (if you pocket a ball, switch to your teammate; if you miss, after the opponent’s turn you still switch). Teammates may not swap order. Violation = foul, opponent ball-in-hand.

This alternate-shot rule may be monitored by both the referee and opponents; fouls can be reported to the referee.

Doubles Repechage Rules

Format

Each team consists of two players (A & B), who complete the challenge in two stages.

Stage 1 – Player A Breaks

  • Setup: Place the black 8-ball on the foot spot. Cue ball may be placed freely behind the headstring.

  • Objective: Hit the 8-ball. Neither the 8-ball nor the cue ball may be pocketed.

  • Judgment: If either the 8-ball or the cue ball is pocketed → stage fails.
If successful → proceed to Stage 2.

Stage 2 – Player B Finishes

  • Objective: From the position left by Player A, pocket the 8-ball into one of the two designated head pockets. The cue ball may not be pocketed.

  • Judgment: 8-ball in designated pocket and cue ball not fouled → success.
    Otherwise → failure.

Progression & Winning

  • Multiple teams succeed: all advance to the next round, again performing the two-stage challenge in turn, until only one team remains.

  • No team succeeds: all teams repeat the challenge until at least one team succeeds.

Notes

  • If the 8-ball or cue ball leaves the table → treat as a standard foul.

  • During Player B’s shot, the layout of the balls must not be moved before striking.
