Disco Puppet


 Is Shoumik Biswas, aka Disco Puppet, one of the most daring musicians around? Is he wired differently? Does he see colours that don’t exist? Does food smell like musical notation to him? One listen to his music, it seems all is true.

 

Disco Puppet occupies a space somewhere between where the auto tune narratives of Bon Iver (think “Woods”) and a jazz drummer doing a four-hour solo might meet, while sharing a fish sandwich.  

 

Born in Kolkata and educated at India’s de facto hub of uncompromising art pedagogy, Bangalore’s Srishti, his live performances see him combining live drums, a flute, his own voice under a number of processes, and off kilter software sequencing.  His latest release Spring doesn’t sound like anything that has ever come out of India, which could be because Bangalore traffic doesn’t really allow anyone to leave their studio, or the fact that his label Consolidate is a kind of incestuous space where artists all play on each others projects.

 

“Spring, Disco Puppet’s new EP is characterised by its irreverence towards the stylistic dictates of genres and their purists. This stems partly from ideology, but mostly from a tendency to get easily bored. But cerebral as his work is, he matches it with heart. His experiments, though nearly scientific in their rigour, are always essentially human. They come from a place of empathy and vulnerability, and perhaps because of this, they are surprisingly moving.”
