RAVI COLTRANE

Johnathan Blake

Grammy-nominated drummer and composer, Johnathan Blake, has been working steadily in the contemporary jazz scene for the past 10 years. He has been a first-call drummer for many notable jazz musicians such as Tom Harrell, David Sanchez, Russell Malone, Kenny Barron, Randy Brecker, and Oliver Lake to name a few. His musicianship, professionalism, and positive attitude are few of the attributes that make him the choice drummer for many. In addition to being a sideman, Johnathan performs with his own group internationally.

Johnathan Blake was born in Philadelphia on July 1st, 1976 as a son of a world-renown jazz violinist, John Blake, Jr. Naturally, Johnathan was introduced to the world of jazz music by his father from early on. Although, Johnathan began playing violin at the age three under his father’s guidance, he never felt at home with the instrument. He always felt a close connection to the drums in spite of his father’s wish for Johnathan to become a violinist.

When Johnathan was 10 years old, a visiting music teacher at his elementary school allowed him to choose an instrument after Johnathan scored perfect on the music aptitude test. Without hesitation, Johnathan picked the drum set. He started taking lessons at the school and it became clear to everyone very quickly that the drums, indeed, was his instrument.

In middle school, Johnathan performed with the jazz band for the first time. He won several awards including Outstanding Achievement Award in Music. Beginning at age 12, Johnathan was involved with the Lovett Hines Youth Ensemble, where he met his long-time friend and musical partner, Jaleel Shaw. With the Lovett Hines Youth Ensemble, Johnathan performed regularly in the Philadelphia area.

Johnathan went on to George Washington High School in Philadelphia, where he was a drum captain of the marching band and started playing with Settlement Music School under the direction of Robert Landham. During the summer time, he participated in many music camps such as Jazz Opportunity for Youth at Montclair State College, Jazz in July Summer Workshop at the University of Massachusetts.

As Johnathan became more involved in music, he began contemplating a career as professional jazz musician. His encounter with Love Supreme was a big turning point for him in making the decision.

Johnathan went on to William Paterson University to pursue his jazz studies further. He studied with Rufus Reid, John Riley, Steve Wilson, and Horace Arnold. While in school, he started working professionally with the Oliver Lake Big Band, Roy Hargrove, and David Sanchez. When McCoy Tyner asked Johnathan to join his group, he pondered leaving school for good to pursue his professional career; however, Johnathan decided to complete his education as it was of utmost importance to him at that time.

In the spring of 2007, Johnathan received his Master’s degree from the Rutgers University. He has studied with Ralph Bowen, Conrad Herwig, and Stanley Cowell. His studies were focused mainly on horning his compositional skills. He was one of the recipients of the 2006 ASCAP Young Jazz Composers Awards.

Johnathan is currently a member of Tom Harrell Quintet, Russell Malone Quartet, and Kenny Barron Trio. He also performs regularly with Donny McCaslin, Jaleel Shaw, Avishai Cohen, and Omer Avital among others. He will be recording with Sadao Watanabe in upcoming month.

Johnathan’s own group often sells out premier venues such as The Jazz Gallery and Smalls in New York City. He is planning to record his debut CD in the fall of 2009.

Glenn Zaleski is one of the most in-demand pianists on the New

York City jazz scene. Originally from Boylston, MA, Glenn has made a name for himself playing with the likes of Ravi Coltrane, Lage Lund, and Ari Hoenig. His debut album, “My Ideal”, was released in March of 2015 on Sunnyside, and has been receiving critical acclaim: Downbeat Magazine named it “sublime”, Jazz Times called it, “an engaging set by a talent worth watching,” and the New York Times named the record a “strong statement”, praising its “fluent but unhurried sense of phrase”.

Glenn has also released two popular albums with the collective Stranahan/Zaleski/Rosato: “Limitless” (Capri 2013), and “Anticipation” (Capri 2011), as well as a duo record with his brother, saxophonist Mark Zaleski. (“Duet Suite”, 2010)

In 2011, Glenn was a semi-finalist in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition, as well as a finalist for the 2011 APA Cole Porter Fellowship in Jazz. He attended the Brubeck Institute Fellowship program in Stockton, CA from 2005- 2007, and then finished his undergraduate studies at The New School in 2009. From 2009-2011, while working towards his graduate degree at NYU, Glenn was also on NYU faculty, teaching a variety of classes and private students.

Dezron Douglas

Known for his musical versatility, bassist Dezron Douglas is one of the most in demand young bassists in jazz today. Composer, bandleader, sideman and educator, Dezron has established himself as a musician’s musician, respected not only for his talent but also for his dedication to the authenticity of the music.

Born and raised in Hartford, CT, Dezron grew up surrounded by music. His first
musical influences weren’t actually jazz, even though he is the nephew of the legendary drummer and composer, Walter Bolden. The sounds that filled his home were of Stevie Wonder, George Benson, Minne Ripperton, Diana Ross, Gregory Isaacs, Peter Tosh, The Clark Sisters, Mahalia Jackson, and Commissioned, just to name a few. As he explains, “Jazz was always around, but not at my House”. He was influenced by the music, moved by the way sound expressed emotion. At the age of 12, he was determined to harness that ability.

With the encouragement of his mentor, the late saxophonist, composer, and educator JackieMclean, he enrolled in the Jackie McLean Institute of African American Music at the Hartt School of Music. Studying at Hartt offered him the opportunity to learn from and work withsuch notable jazz musicians such as Nat Reeves, Steve Davis, and of course Jackie McLean.

Transcribing music into emotion was an effortless process for the young bassist. The years at Hartt helped Dezron to form his own technical approach to the bass, further developing his versatility. Natural talent combined with his ability to swing made Dezron one of the most sought after young bassists. While still in school he routinely played with: Rene McLean. Steve Davis, Jimmy Greene, Alan Jay Palmer, Abraham Burton and Eric McPherson, Nita Zarif, and Montenia Shider.

Dezron began recording in 2005, “Marsalis Music Honors Michael Carvin”, produced
by Branford Marsalis, the CD featured Master drummer Michael Carvin. This experience opened up a flood gate of other opportunities. Over the years, he has continued to perform and record with Michael Carvin, Pharoah Sanders, Cyrus Chestnut, Louis Hayes, George Cables, Abraham Burton/Eric McPherson, Rene McLean, Al Foster, Ravi Coltrane, Billy Drummond, Steve Davis, Victor Lewis, Winard Harper, Mulgrew
Miller, Lewis Nash, Kevin Mahogany, Carla Cook, Kenny Garrett, Steve Coleman, Willie

Jones III, Duane Eubanks, Eric Reed, Tomasz Stanko, Vincent Herring, Papo Vazquez and The Marsalis Family.

Dezron is currently a member of Louis Hayes Jazz Communicators, Ravi Coltrane Quartet, Papo Vazquez Mighty Pirates, and he is also a long standing member of The Cyrus Chestnut Trio amongst many other associations within the music scene. He has recorded four albums as a leader; two on the VENUS music label, one on the SMALLSLIVE label and one independent.
