(Danilo Rea)

DANILO REA

The musical history of Danilo Rea (born in Vicenza on 9/8/1957) begins in his Roman home, where already by the age of two, he is enchanted more by the music from the vinyl records of Domenico Modugno than by any other toy. His favourite game is playing the piano, which steadily becomes his passion. Later Danilo attends and graduates with honors from the Conservatory of Santa Cecilia.

Danilo’s classical, rock and pop backgrounds influence his training and eventually lead him to jazz, his true passion. His unmistakable and unique style consists of two ingredients: melody and improvisation.

He soon becomes sought after by leading Italian singer songwriters and artists, and he collaborates with Mina, Claudio Baglioni, Pino Daniele, Domenico,Modugno, Fiorella Mannoia, Riccardo Cocciante, Renato Zero, Adriano Celentano and Gianni Morandi.

Danilo is still considered Mina’s pianist of trust, who wanted him by her side in the rare and exceptional live recordings from her recording studio in Lugano in 2001.

His debut as a jazz piano player comes in 1975 together with the Trio di Roma (with Enzo Pietropaoli and Roberto Gatto). In the '80s Danilo joins Giovanni Tommaso’s quintet and Lingomania led by Maurizio Giammarco.

Thanks to his talent he plays with some of the most important international artists, such as Chet Baker, Lee Konitz, Steve Grossman, Bob Berg, Phil Woods,Michael Brecker, Tony Oxley, Joe Lovano, Gato Barbieri, Aldo Romano, Brad Meldahu, Danilo Perez and Michel Camilo.

In 1997, together with Enzo Pietropaoli and Fabrizio Sferra, Danilo founds Doctor 3, a trio that for over ten years, plays the most important Italian jazz venues and performs in Europe, USA, South America, and China.

Since 2000, Danilo has been shaping his natural talent for improvisation and his own expressive universe in Piano Solo; performances shaped by the most diverse ideas and the cornerstones of jazz as well as by Italian songs and opera arias.

His first solo work is Lost in Europe (2000) composed during a European tour.

The album Lirico follows in 2003 in which the pianist mixes opera and jazz, improvising operatic themes and reviving their unfading and persistent vitality.

In the albums Solo (2006) and Introverso (2008) Rea works with his unpublished solo piano compositions, and finally in the recent A Tribute to Fabrizio de André, recorded for the prestigious German label ACT in 2010, the artist pays homage to the great Italian poet and songwriter.

Danilo Rea has played in the most famous jazz festivals in Europe, USA, Canada,Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Senegal, India, Japan, China, Korea and Australia. He has performed in some of the world’s most prestigious venues, such as the Gugghenheim in both New York and Venice for a Concert in honor of Peggy Gugghenheim (2008).

He has been elected to represent Italy for the event Jazz Made in Italy at the Shanghai Expo in China (2010).

Danilo has played with all the big names of Italian jazz and is a constant presence at Umbria Jazz in Italy and in many Jazz festivals worldwide.

Among his more recent experiences, it is worth mentioning his collaboration with Gino Paoli, already having worked together on “Un incontro in jazz” their artistic partnership follows on with the album and live performances of “Due come noi” (2012) and “Napoli con amore” (2013) In 2014 Danilo composes the music for the film “Quando c'era Berlinguer and in 2015 for “I bambini sanno” both directed by Walter Veltroni, During the summer of the same year “In Bach” debuts at Umbria Jazz a live concert together with Ramin Bahrami, a tribute to the imposing heritage of Johann Sebastian.Bach 16th October 2015 sees the release of the new piano solo album inspired by the unforgettable repertoire of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.

Danilo currently teaches at the Jazz Department of the Conservatory of Santa Cecilia in Rome. He has recently been appointed Artistic Director of Events in Cecina.

ART AND CULTURE

In 1989 Danilo takes part in Requiem per Pierpaolo Pasolini, the work of Roberto De Simone, performed at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples under the direction of Zoltan Pesko.

In 2006 he participates in the Concert for Europe, starring with Claudio Baglioni, Nicola Piovani and Luis Bacalov on the island of Ventotene (Italy).

In the 2007-2008 season, to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of Nel Blu dipinto di Blu, Danilo participates together with other famous musicians in the performance Uomini in Frac in which celebrated songs by Domenico Modugno are performed.

In 2007 he accompanies Valerio Mastrandrea in the recital dedicated to Pierpaolo Pasolini, Accattone in Jazz.

In 2009 Danilo plays in a series of prestigious Concerts at the Quirinale (official residence of the President of the Italian Republic) with Paolo Damiani with the work Sentieri Improvvisi. Danilo is one of the guest artists for the fundraising event dedicated to the restoration of the Teatro Municipale in L'Aquila organized by the Ministry of Culture at the Teatro La Fenice Venice.

In 2010, Walter Veltroni (former Mayor of Rome) invites Danilo along with other musicians to participate in La musica di Noi , the soundtrack of the bestselling book written by the well-known politician.

Amongst his most recent performances, it is worth mentioning a memorable concert on the roofs of Rome (Concerto sui tetti di Roma) together with Damiani and Rashmi in favor of Emergency (2011) and the unusual confrontation between science and improvisational jazz with Piero Angela entitled In chiave di Quark, at the Auditorium Parco della Musica in 2012.
