Seán Óg McKiernan and Cian Mulligan (Óg & Cian) met in Galway City on the west coast of Ireland in 2010 where they formed the, soon to be well known bluegrass band, ‘The Oldtown Rounders’. The band included several other well established local musicians including American mandolin player Chris ‘Kentucky’ White, song writer and lead singer of the Sumbrella’s, Finnish fiddle player Juliana Erkkonen of Café Minor fame, and double bass player Fergus Packman.

The band went on to establish itself as one of Ireland’s top bands on the bluegrass and folk music scene and for 5 years toured Ireland’s festival circuit, regularly featuring at some of Ireland’s largest music festivals including the Electric Picnic, Body and Soul, and the Westport International Bluegrass Festival. In 2015, Óg left Ireland and returned to his wife’s home city of Hefei in Anhui, China, and ‘The Rounders’ continued to tour for the next two years. Cian recently arrived in Hefei to join up with Óg again as a two-piece bluegrass act. Their act is composed mainly of interpretations and rearrangements of traditional bluegrass and Irish tunes and songs. Improvisation is a fundamental feature of bluegrass music, and Óg and Cian demonstrate this throughout their set, trading solos and harmonising melodies while remaining true to the genre’s traditions.

Óg was born in rural Republic of Ireland in a small town near the Northern Irish border called Cootehill. The area is a hotbed of traditional Irish music and Óg grew up listening to and learning to play the genre on guitar from an early age, while also taking up the tenor banjo and mandolin. He became well renowned as a folk singer in his late teens, reinterpreting old ballads and tunes and adapting them to his playing style which had become increasingly influenced by blues music. Óg left Ireland for Toronto, Canada in 2002 where he worked during the days and performed as a solo artist at night, performing his interpretations of Irish music in bars and venues across the city. He later spend time living in Nova Scotia and Boston in the USA and along the way became more and more familiar with the various styles of North American folk music, including bluegrass. His next 15 years would be dedicated to studying bluegrass guitar, a particular style known as ‘flatpicking’.

Over the next few years Óg would spend time travelling and living in Spain and, later, India (where he studied sitar in Varanasi). He came to Hefei, China in 2006 where he taught English for a while but continued to perform with a local blues band known as ‘Traveller’, and as a solo performer. He returned to Ireland in late 2009 where he met Cian and the boys formed ‘The Oldtown Rounders’. While in Galway, Óg also began to work with the nationally renowned country singer Ruth Dillon, often performing as a duet or with Ruth’s bluegrass band ‘The Molly Hicks’ where he played lead guitar and 5-string banjo. Óg now lives in Hefei with his wife where he helps run a bar, teaches music, and performs regularly with several different groups and as a solo act.

Cian Mulligan – 五弦班卓琴

A native of Kinvarra, Co. Galway, Cian grew up in a professional music environment. His father, Paul Mulligan, is a well-renowned songwriter, sound engineer and recording studio owner. Paul’s debut album ‘Strong Friend’ featured a guest appearance from American country music legend, and friend, John Prine. Heavily influenced by the environment he grew up in, Cian himself began playing Irish and country music from a very early age, initially studying the fiddle before moving on the guitar and 5–string banjo.

Today, Cian is regarded not only as one of Ireland’s finest 5-string banjo players, but also one of it’s finest flatpickers. He has performed on stage with legends such as John Prine and Abigail Washburn and is acquainted with such Irish music superstars as Johnny Moynihan and ‘Galway’ Joe Dolan whom he grew up playing with and learning from. Cian studied for his Bachelor’s degree in music in Waterford city and became more exposed to funk, jazz and blues, genres which he now incorporates into his own unique style of banjo playing. In 2009, he joined Galway based group ‘The Rye’, described by New York based journalist Mike Farragher as “the freshest and most exciting approaches to Irish music heard in recent times”. Cian continued to play and tour throughout Ireland and Western Europe with The Rye until came to China in 2017.
