Sauti Sol is an award-winning afro pop group from Kenya, crowned Best Group (Africa) at the 2016 MTV Africa Music Awards, Soundcity MTV Awards, AFRIMA Awards and UK’s BEFFTA Awards. They also won Best African Group at African Muzik Magazine Awards (2015 AFRIMMA) and an MTV EMA Award for Best African Act in 2014.

Sauti Sol’s discography stands at a 2012 self-titled collaborative EP with South African avant-garde innovative rapper/producer Spoek Mathambo. Three albums namely: Mwanzo (2008), Sol Filosofia (2011) and Live and Die in Afrika (2015) have received high acclaim on Kenyan charts and gained international attention, including US President Barack Obama mentioning the fact that Sura Yako has influenced American pop culture.

Sauti Sol has steadily built their professional international experience by touring Africa, Europe and the US. In 2016, their notable live performances include Live and Die in Afrika Tour, Swaziland’s Bushfire Festival, Mozambique’s Azgo Festival and at 2baba’s Disruption Africa Kenyan concert. 2015’s notable showcases included a performance at the 2015 Global Citizen Festival alongside international acts Pearl Jam and Chris Martin (Coldplay), performing at the Milan Expo 2015, a 2015 #SautiSolRoad2BET American Tour (Washington DC, Minneapolis MN, Atlanta GA, Seattle, Dallas TX, New Jersey and Los Angeles CA), In 2011 and 2012 the band performed at the South by Southwest Music Festival (SXSW) in Austin, Texas. In June same year, they performed at the Kalorvy Vary International film festival and Colours of Ostrava 2012, Czech Republic’s biggest music festival.

Sauti Sol has also performed at widely televised events including: the MTV Africa Music Awards (2016, 2015 & 2014), Kenya’s 51st Independence Day (2014), inauguration of Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta (2013), Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards held in Nigeria (2013) and at Big Brother Africa Reality Show in South Africa (2012).

· In 2016, Washington Post featured Sauti Sol: “Kenyan band takes Afro-pop Music Worldwide”. The single Live and Die in Afrika was declared by BBC Africa’s in their Top 10 tracks of 2015 with the album making it into Okayafrica’s Top 15 of 2015. Sauti Sol were also listed as Billboard Africa’s Most Promising Music Group, The Standard Newspaper’s 2016 Agenda Setters and DRUM Magazine East Africa's 2015 Movers and Shakers.

· In 2015, Sauti Sol made global headlines after dancing (Lipala Dance) with Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta and USA President Barack Obama, during his trip to Kenya (25th July 2015). They also danced to Sura Yako with Richard Branson at his exclusive dinner hosted at NY’s Hudson Hotel. Same year, BBC’s 1Xtra also named Sauti Sol the Top African act to watch. They were interviewed for the ‘A Richer World’ season for BBC World Service Radio, World TV and 1Xtra.

SOMA SOMA INITIATIVE

SOMA SOMA倡议

Sauti Sol launched the SOMA SOMA Initiative (2012) to promote a knowledge seeking culture among Africans of all age and schooling. The initiative motivates all to embrace education as a means to achieving their dreams and to highlight the challenges faced by these students, with an aim of seeking lasting solutions. They are currently World Voice champions for Kenya. Through Soma Soma, the group has partnered or worked with various like-minded campaigns and or/ institutions (The Field Marsham Foundation, E-Kitabu, Knowledge Empowering Youth and Story Moja Festival) to spread this message. Most noted involvement is the a library installations in partnership with Knowledge Empowering Youth (KEY) at Starehe Girls Centre (2015) among many.They have also mentored 700 students and 100 teachers from Kenya’s 47 counties at the Annual Secondary Schools Student Leaders National Congress (2013). Sauti Sol were awarded by Riara Group of Schools earlier this year as Role Models for their tireless efforts in cultivating and spreading the reading culture across schools in Kenya.
